Library Services & Information

  • Cell phone use is not allowed in the LRC - TAKE YOUR CALL TO THE HALL.  Cell phones should be on silent or vibrate - you can text.
     

  • Unattended children are not allowed in the LRC or Spencerian College.  Children must be accompanied by a parent.  Parents will be paged if a child is left unaccompanied.
     

  • In-house services:

         The library provides the following in-house services:
     

    • Audio-visual Equipment: circulate to faculty/staff only
       

    • Collections
      Reference collection:  does not circulate / library use only
      Periodicals: circulate as-needed, short term loan
      Reserves collection: does not circulate / library use only
      General collections: books, media circulate two weeks
       

    • Computers:  The library provides desktop PCs that require a valid Spencerian or Sullivan System login.  The PCs all have the Microsoft Office 2007, access to the Internet (and the over 13,600 periodical titles available via the library's web site), and print capability.  Users are expected to follow the SC Computer Use Policy and should be aware of copyright restrictions (see below).

      The LRC computers do not have floppy drives. You need to use a flash drive, CD or your "Locker" to save materials.  Do not save material to the hard drive or desktop.
      You can not download software to the LRC computers
       

    • Databases & Full-text Periodicals: via the Sullivan University Library's web page from on-campus or home; requires a valid user ID and password.
       

    • Email: is availalbe through the student portal or by connecting directly, see button in left frame.  See also login help.
       

    • Interlibrary Loan: currently, Spencerian Lexington LRC will process interlibrary loan requests only within the Sullivan University System Libraries.
      Other SUS campus patrons should submit their ILL request through their campus library      .
      Spencerian Lex students can come in the LRC and submit a request form or send an email to the librarian. An email requests must contain: as full a citation for the requested materials as possible, your full name, student ID, and Spencerian email address.  You will be notified by email when material is recevied.

    • Internet access: requires a valid user ID and password. Users are expected to follow the SC Computer Use Policy.
       

    • Photocopying:  A coin-operated photocopier is available in the library for making copies. Copies are 10¢ per page.  The copier will accept nickels, dimes, quarters and one-dollar bills.  Sorry, we cannot make change; however, a bill-changer is available in the student lounge.  Please see copyright statement below.
       

    • Student Portal: access your grades, email, schedule, etc. Requires a valid user ID and password. 
       

    • WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS

      The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyright material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purpose in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

  • Ask-A-Librarian
         The Sullivan University Library offers reference assistance via email for current Sullivan students and faculty.  Librarians can recommend search strategies and resources, and can answer brief factual questions.  Replies are sent within 48 hours, Monday - Friday.  Click here to submit an email reference question.
     

  • Outside libraries and service:
    SpenLex students, faculty and staff can use the facilities of the Sullivan University System Libraries.
    Note: currently, Spencerian Lexington LRC will process interlibrary loans only within the Sullivan University System Libraries.

    Local public libraries can also be a source of services for SpenLex students, faculty and staff.

    Local area state universities and colleges may extend some type of borrowing privileges or allow use of materials for Kentucky residents - contact the individual library for information.

    Private universities, colleges and institutions rarely provide service for users outside their community. Contact the individual institution.
     

  • Purchase Requests

    Spencerian faculty/staff/students may submit order requests directly to the librarian. A form is available in the LRC or you can email the librarian with your requests.  All purchase requests should support the curricula of the institution.  Personal purchase requests are not accepted.
