Finding Books:

Search the library catalog using a specific topic, such as children with disabilities, special education, children with mental disabilities, autism, downs syndromecerebral palsy, etc.; or browse the following subject areas in the Dewey Decimal numbers indicated below:

Academic Search Premier: An EBSCOhost? database indexing 4,450 scholarly peer-reviewed journals back to 1975 and providing the corresponding full-text/full-image for articles in all academic disciplines. Updated daily.

CINAHL: An EBSCOhost? full-text database providing indexing and abstracts to almost a million articles from 1700 nursing and allied health journals back to 1982. 

Directory of Open Access Journals:  This service covers 815 free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals in all subjects and languages.

                   International journal of special education

Health Source ? Consumer Edition: This database is the richest collection of consumer health information available to libraries worldwide. This resource provides access to more than 130 full text, consumer health magazines, including American Fitness, Better Nutrition, Fit Pregnancy, Harvard Health Letter, HealthFacts, Men's Health, Muscle & Fitness, Prevention, Vegetarian Times, and many others. This database also includes searchable full text for more than 1,000 health-related pamphlets and 130 health reference books, including books published by the People's Medical Society. Additionally, Health Source: Consumer Edition contains more than 4,500 Clinical Reference Systems reports (in English and Spanish) and the Lexi-PAL Drug Guide, which provides access to 1,300 drug monograph entries and Merriam-Webster's Medical Desk Dictionary. Health Source: Consumer Edition covers topics such as AIDS, cancer, diabetes, drugs & alcohol, aging, fitness, nutrition & dietetics, children's health, women's health, etc.

LINCS (National Institute for Literacy): Available through The Kentucky Virtual Library (KYVL), these Internet resources are designed for use by adult educators and specialist in family literacy.

MasterFILE Premier: An EBSCOhost? database primarily designed as a general reference tool for public libraries, this database provides full-text articles from reference sources including magazines, books, biographies, primary documents, photos, maps and flags.  Updated daily.

MEDLINE: Available through EBSCOhost?, this is the National Library of Medicine?s database providing authoritative indexing to 4600+ scholarly medical, nursing, veterinary science, and other health-related journals from 1966 to the present.

Newspaper Source: An EBSCOhost? database providing full-text articles from 23 national and international newspapers, television and radio news transcripts, and 200 regional U.S. newspapers.  Updated daily.

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center: Critical Thinking  A database providing differing points of view on current social issues, such as affirmative action, censorship, ecology and mental healthFull-text entries on various disabilty related topics.  Try keyword searches for "children with disabilities" or "developmental disabilities," or "special education."  Also try searching for specific disabilities.

Pre-CINAHL: An EBSCOhost? citational database companion to CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) which provides access to new articles and bibliographic information before it is moved into CINAHL.

Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection: An EBSCOhost? database indexing 550+ scholarly/peer-reviewed journals back to 1965 on a wide range of psychiatric and psychological subjects.  Updated daily.

PubMed Central: A free full-text digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature provided by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH).

New York Times: Newspaper articles from New York Times, many include full text.

NOTE: You can also click the search button below to locate online periodicals related to child (pediatric) health issues. Once you access the health sciences page, scroll down and click Pediatrics under the Medicine subject heading. As mentioned above, if you are off-campus, you will need to go to the Remote Access Page tab.   

 

Periodical Search:

Use the periodical search function on the Catalog home page to find periodical titles indexed in our databases.  For example, if you have a citation to an article and want to see if it is available full-text in our databases, search for the journal title, and the system will lead you to the correct database.

Children's Health, the Nation's Wealth: Assessing & Improving Child Health: A (2004) National Academics Press e-book that addresses work by the National Research Council & the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies which focused on the factors influencing children's health and recommendations for the future.

Council for Exceptional Children Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving educational outcomes for individuals with exceptionalities, students with disabilities, and/or the gifted.  Web site includes discussion forums, publications, law & resources, and professional development.

Directory of Health Organizations Online: Directory provided by the National Library of Medicine enables users to search for topics or information from either the NLM Gateway, Health Hotlines, PubMed or Locatorplus sites.

Internet Special Education Resources: Nationwide directory of professionals useful for parents and caregivers to find special education professionals with expertise in learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder assessment, therapy, advocacy, and other special needs.

Medline Plus: Authoritative information on health related topics from the National Library of Medicine.

National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities: NICHCY provides research-based information pertaining to disabilities, legislation, and educational practices.

National Institute of Mental Health: This site features recent publications from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIHM) offering educational resources and research programs  for mental health disorders. 

Special Education Resources on the Internet: Index of electronic resources for special education topics, best practices and national organizations.

United States Department of Health and Human Services: Information that includes a "Reference Collections" section.
