I have tried to log on
from a campus computer and cannot. What do I need to do?
- When you sit
down at a computer workstation, press the Ctrl, Alt, Delete
buttons on the keyboard at the same time. A password screen will
appear (you may also get a screen saying Do not attempt to log on
unless you are an authorized user. In that case, click OK and the
password screen will appear).
- The Password
Screen will have two or three boxes:
- With two
boxes:
- Type
suscorp\username01 OR suscorp\username1234, in
which 1234 represents a random four-digit number, in the User Name box.
Both formats are used at Sullivan University. You can find
your user name on your schedule card.
- If your
username uses the first format (continuing students in the
Winter 2006 quarter), be sure to use the first
initial of your given first name (no nicknames or your middle
name); your complete last name; and a number (usually 01) with
no spaces between the first initial, last name, and number. If
there are other students with the same first initial and last
name, the number could be 02, 03, 04, etc. (i.e. Your name is
John Smith. Your user name is jsmith01. You would enter
suscorp\jsmith01 in the User Name box). Be sure and type in
suscorp\ before your user name. Suscorp is the
domain.
- If your
username uses the second format (usually new students or
students returning after a break in the Winter 2006
quarter), be sure to use the first
initial of your given first name (no nicknames or your middle
name); the first five letters of your last name; and a random number,
listed on your schedule, with
no spaces between the first initial, last name, and number.
For example, if your name is John Martin, your user name is jmarti1234,
with a random four-digit number replacing the 1234. You would enter
suscorp\jsmith1234 in the User Name box). Be sure and type in
suscorp\ before your user name. Suscorp is the
domain.
- Type your
password in the second box. The first time you log on, the
password will be your social security number without hyphens.
If you use the second format and your social security number
does not work, try the four-digit number that ends your
username.
- Click Go.
- With three
boxes:
- Type your
user name in the User Name box. (See the above information
about the user name).
- Type your
password in the Password box. This is usually your social
security number without hyphens.
- Type
suscorp in the Log On To box. Suscorp is the domain.
- Click Go.
- If you are
unable to log on after using the above procedures, double check
and make sure everything is spelled correctly.
- Once you have
tried to log on unsuccessfully for three or more tries, the system
may deny you access for a short time (this is to prevent
unauthorized persons from trying to access the system using your
user name).
- If you are still
unable to log on, you will need to talk with one of the IT
personnel to determine what is wrong with your logon. Their
extension is 410, and their email address is ITSupport@sullivan.edu
Ive tried to access the
databases remotely and cannot get to them. What do I need to do?
You should be able
to access the databases remotely (from another location).
- First, have you
logged on to a computer on campus since January 2006 to verify
that your user name and password is correct, and that you can log
on?
- If so, go to
http://library.sullivan.edu. This is the Librarys web
page. Click on the Databases button. You should receive a screen
listing the databases.
- You would then
need to click the Remote Access option from the databases menu.
- A Password
Screen will appear. The screen will have either two or three
boxes.
- With two
boxes:
- Type
suscorp\username01 or suscorp\username1234 in the User Name box. You can find
your user name on your schedule card. Be sure to use the first
initial of your given first name (no nicknames or your middle
name); your complete last name; and a number (usually 01) with
no spaces between the first initial, last name, and number. If
there are other students with the same first initial and last
name, the number could be 02, 03, 04, etc. (i.e. Your name is
John Smith. Your user name is jsmith01. You would enter
suscorp\jsmith01 in the User Name box). Be sure and type in
suscorp\ before your user name. Suscorp is the
domain.
- Type your
password in the second box. The first time you log on, the
password will be your social security number without hyphens.
- Click Go.
- With three
boxes:
- Type your
user name in the User Name box. (See the above information
about the user name).
- Type your
password in the Password box. This is usually your social
security number without hyphens.
- Type
suscorp in the Log On To box. Sullivan is the domain.
- Click Go.
- You will then be
in the Remote Access Help page. Follow the directions about how to
access the various databases. For example, you should be able to
access ABI Proquest from this page. Other databases will need
passwords which are listed on this page.
- After locating
the password(s) for a database, copy down the password(s), return
to the database screen, and click on the link to the database. Use
the password(s) where needed to access the database.
- If you have
tried to access the databases using the given passwords
unsuccessfully, you will need to contact the library staff.
My instructor keeps
talking about saving information in a locker. What is he/she talking
about?
- Every Sullivan
University students has space on the network to store papers and
other information (a locker). This can be convenient because you
can save information to your locker from one computer and; later,
go to another computer and pull up the information to print or
continue working on.
- To save
information to your locker:
- Log on a
computer.
- Go to wherever
the information is that you want to save. (for example, you were
in Word working on a paper and want to save the paper).
- Go to File and
then Save As.
- Click on the
drop down menu on the Save In box and double click on your
username.
- Finally, click
on the Save button to save your paper (be sure that your paper
has a name in the File Name box).
- To open your
locker:
- Double click
on the My Computer icon on the desktop.
- The items in
My Computer will appear.
- Find your username
and click on it to open your locker.
- Your locker
should open and display the contents.
- Double click
on the item you want to view.
My
instructor has assigned a paper that requires articles from a
magazine. The library does not appear to have the magazines I need.
Why would my instructor require this? She/he said I cannot use
information from the Internet.
- Many of the
magazines or information that you need probably can be found using
an online database from a system such as ABI Proquest, InfoTrac,
or EBSCOhost. These database systems contain magazines or journals
online. This is not using information from the Internet.
The articles found on these database systems are exactly the same
as a hard (print) copy of the article. Magazines such as Time
and Newsweek can be found on these databases. Your CSS
instructor should accept an article found on reliable, reputable
databases such as these. If you have any questions, please be sure
and check with your instructor.
I
have lost one of the weekly CSS assignments (or the dog ate them, or
they were rained on, or I missed class that day, etc). Is there any
place I can get a replacement assignment?
- The assignments
are placed on the web at the end of the week of class that the
assignment is given to the students.
- All of the
assignments will be found in the Worksheets section of the Access
Tutorials page. (Go to
http://library.sullivan.edu , click on the Access Tutorials
link, and click on the Worksheets link found under College
Success Skills Class Materials). The worksheets are in .pdf
format. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader software on the
computer you are using in order to access the worksheets. (The
computers in the lab have Adobe Acrobat Reader software loaded).
- You need to be
sure and ask your instructor which assignments are needed (some
instructors may omit or assign different papers that week).
- IMPORTANT:
The assignments that are placed on the web are taken off during
week 11 of the quarter for updating and corrections. You will
normally receive assignments during weeks 4 8 during the Library
component of the CSS class. Week 9 is an evaluation and make-up
week. So there should not be a problem. If you know that you will
not complete the assignments on time, you should make a copy of
the assignment to complete at a later time; or make alternative
arrangements with your instructor.
I
missed class one day and now am totally lost on the assignment. What
can I do?
- Each database
taught in class, as well as the Online Catalog, and the Internet,
has an online tutorial that provides details on how to use and
obtain information.
- Though these
tutorials do not make up for a missed class, they should provide
you with enough information to complete an assignment.
- The online
databases themselves also have Help screens which should provide
information.
- To access the
online tutorials, go to the Sullivan Library web page (http://library.sullivan.edu/library)
and click on the Access Tutorials link.
Ive
tried but I cannot find anything on my subject using these #@!!
databases. I cannot find anything in a book, magazine, or newspaper
either. This is very frustrating. What can I do?
- First, you may
want to look at the short tutorial Research Basics: Steps for
Successful Research found in the Access Tutorials section of the
Librarys web page.
- You may also
want to look at your topic or subject. Is it extremely narrow in
focus? (For example, you may find little or nothing on a very
narrow topic such as nutritional habits of 18-year old female
college students during the winter months.). You may need to
broaden your topic somewhat. (example: diet or nutrition of
college students). However, if your topic is too broad, you may
need to narrow it down somewhat or you can become overwhelmed with
information. (Some databases provide subjects along with broader
and narrower related subjects).
- You would want
to look at the database you are using. Is it an appropriate
database for your topic? (i.e. a business database may be
inappropriate for health-related topics).
- If youve
followed the above suggestions and are still having problems, you
may want to consider synonyms (or other words) that could be used
for your topic (i.e. attorney for lawyer, physician for doctor,
etc.).
- You can also ask
your instructor or librarian for assistance. They may be able to
head you in the right direction.
- Finally, if you
still cannot find information for your paper, you may need to
consider altering or changing your topic.
Ive
heard some of my fellow students discussing a Virtual Workbook.
What is the Virtual Workbook and how is it different from the
regular assignments?
I dont
know how to type my paper on the computer (or how to use Microsoft
Word). How can I learn how?
- There are tutors
available to help you with word processing questions and problems.
- The tutors are
usually found in the main building. The tutors' schedule can be
picked up from the Library's circulation desk.
